Griffin Police and Fire-Rescue Respond to Grenade Found
in the Back Yard of at Residence on Hill wood Drive Friday
Morning.
The Griffin Police Department and Griffin Fire-Rescue Department
responded to 1329 Hillwood Drive at approximately 10:00 AM this
morning in reference to a call concerning a grenade found in the
backyard of the location. Both departments responded and set up
a protective perimeter. The incident started when Jim Lepore was digging a grave for his dog that had recently passed away. He became very concerned when he unearthed what appeared to be a grenade. He called 911 due to his concern. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded since they have the training and equipment to investigate and handle such items. According to Griffin Fire-Rescue Captain Mark Gilreath, the grenade was still capable of inflicting harm. The grenade was removed via a remote operated robot and trained GBI Agents capable of handling explosive devices. It was transported safely to the Spalding County Fire Department’s Headquarters where it was detonated without any injuries or damage to property. Investigator Bryan Clanton of the Griffin Police Department explained the location and purpose of the detonation. “This location off of Carver Road is the safest location to dispose of any item that is potentially dangerous such as old grenades or any other explosive device. There is enough of a safe zone to prevent injuries to the public, fire personnel, or law enforcement officers. Also, fire response resources are readily available. It was detonated so that the item would not have to spend a long duration in transit on the roadway.”
