Candidate for Governor General David Poythress, Former Adjutant General of Georgia, Revenue Commissioner, and Secretary of State talked with WKEU news on Friday about the state revenue problems. Poythress said that he is very concerned over the state budget and proposed cuts. He said that Education is the last place that needs to be cut. he further stated "Many other places need to be cut before hacking on education and especially higher education." Continuing Poythress stated " Our Educational institutions are the key to economic recovery. And the other side of the problem is the loss of taxes due to the many special inertest exemptions over the years initially sold as a way for economic development. We have seen taxes lost from the revenue stream for special interest groups and we re not generating the type revenue needed Poythress is proposing a whole sale overhaul of the entire revenue system in Georgia. Poythress stated " The system is out of balance and we are not colleting the taxes we need and the system is not fair. He also was very upset over the special interest programs not cut with consideration to the budget. He identified the 25 million for a Go Fish Georgia Lake, 10 million for Equestrian stable,70 million for a Little league stadium. He was quick to point out that he supports Little league and horses but not at the expense of taking food of the table of Georgians and laying off or furloughing teachers. |
